Vágatunnilin connects Vágar to Streymoy. Tolled, automatic, no booth.

Almost everyone starts and ends here. Vágar has the airport, the most photographed lake in the country, and the ferry to Mykines — which means it is also where the most trips go wrong, because the Mykines crossing is weather-dependent and books out.

Sørvágsvatn, the lake that appears to hang above the sea, is a straightforward 45-minute walk each way from a marked car park. There is a landowner access fee. It is not a wilderness experience in July.

The Mykines ferry cancels frequently in wind and does not always run outside the summer season. Never plan Mykines as your only free day.

Come here for

  • First and last nights of a trip
  • Sørvágsvatn and Múlafossur at Gásadalur
  • Reaching Mykines

Go elsewhere if you want

  • A base for the northern islands — it is the wrong end of the country
  • Quiet at the main sights in summer

Getting around Vágar

Car recommended
Little within walking distance of the door. Bus 300 runs from the airport to Tórshavn and is genuinely useful. Everything else on Vágar assumes a car.
