Norðoyatunnilin runs from Eysturoy to Borðoy. Kalsoy, Kunoy, Viðoy, Svínoy and Fugloy are beyond it — some by road, some only by ferry.

Klaksvík is the country’s second town and the only place outside Tórshavn that feels like a town rather than a village. It is a working fishing port with a real high street, and it makes the obvious base for the north.

The draw beyond it is Kalsoy — a long thin island reached by a small car ferry from Klaksvík, ending in the Kallur lighthouse walk. The ferry is small, it fills, and in summer the queue can mean a two-hour wait or being turned away entirely.

Kalsoy ferry capacity is the single most common cause of a wasted day in the north. Arrive early, or go on foot and walk from Syðradalur.

Come here for

  • The Kallur lighthouse walk on Kalsoy
  • A second town base with actual shops
  • Getting genuinely far from other visitors

Go elsewhere if you want

  • A day trip from Vágar — it is two hours each way
  • Loose planning in summer, because of ferry capacity

Getting around Norðoyggjar

Car essential
There is no practical alternative to driving. Klaksvík has a bus service and a walkable centre. The islands beyond it do not.
