Getting the place ready

Kirkjubøur was the religious and cultural centre of the Faroes for centuries. The Magnus Cathedral has stood roofless since the fourteenth century, and the Roykstovan farmhouse next to it has been lived in by the same family for seventeen generations.

It is close enough to Tórshavn to be a genuine option without a car — the old postal path over the mountain is a well-marked two-hour walk, and there is a bus.

One of the few real sights reachable from Tórshavn on foot.
