5 nights

Five days

Two bases — Tórshavn and the north — which is the shape most first trips should take.

Do you need a car?
Yes
Rough cost per person
11.000 DKK 19.000 DKK

Per person, excluding flights, including a shared rental car and tunnel tolls.

Who this suits

  • A first trip with enough time to do it properly
  • Travellers who want both the town and genuine remoteness
  • Anyone hiring a car

Day by day

Day1

Arrive, and stay near the airport

Sørvágur on the first night removes the drive when you are tired.

  • Collect the rental car at the airport rather than in town.

If the weather turns: Nothing here depends on weather.

Day2

Vágar, then east to Tórshavn

Sørvágsvatn and Gásadalur, then the tunnel across.

Sleep in Tórshavn Car needed Weather-dependent
  • Vágatunnilin is tolled and billed to the rental afterwards.
  • Arrive in Tórshavn in time to eat — kitchens close earlier than you expect.

If the weather turns: Skip the lake walk and go straight over; use the afternoon for the old town and the galleries.

Day3

Tórshavn and Kirkjubøur

A day without the car, which after two days of driving is welcome.

  • City buses are free.
  • This is the day to eat well.

If the weather turns: Entirely workable in rain.

Day4

North to Gjógv

Drive up through Eysturoy, over to Eiði for the sea stacks, and on to Gjógv.

Sleep in Gjógv Car needed Weather-dependent
  • Fill up at Oyrarbakki — there is no fuel further north.
  • Book dinner in Gjógv before you leave Tórshavn. There is one place.

If the weather turns: The gorge is dramatic in weather. Slættaratindur is not — leave the summit for another trip.

Day5

Back west, and fly

Saksun on the way if time and the road allow.

Sleep in Tórshavn Car needed Weather-dependent
  • Saksun parking is restricted and the land is private — read the signage.
  • Allow well over two hours to reach the airport from Gjógv.

If the weather turns: Drive straight to the airport and use the extra time in Sørvágur.

Where this plan is fragile

  • Day four assumes a car. Without one, Gjógv is effectively unreachable.
  • Dinner in Gjógv must be arranged in advance.
  • This shape has no slack — a cancelled day costs you a location.
