Eating in the Faroe Islands
Will I be able to find dinner?
In Tórshavn, easily. Outside it, dinner is something you arrange in advance rather than find.
The short version
- Tórshavn has most of the country’s restaurants.
- Village kitchens close early and often need booking.
- Supermarket hours are limited, especially Sundays.
This is the practical problem BEST was built to surface. In a village of twenty people there may be exactly one place to eat, it may be your guesthouse, and it may not take walk-ins.
The rule
If you are staying outside Tórshavn or Klaksvík, arrange dinner when you book the room. Not the day before — when you book.
What is worth seeking out
- Ræst — the fermented tradition, an acquired taste and genuinely distinctive.
- Fresh fish, which is as good as anywhere in the North Atlantic.
- Faroese lamb, which tastes of the hillside it grew on.
- Home-bakery culture — the heimablídni tradition of dinner in a private home.
We do not know: Opening hours
BEST has no opening-hours data. The national POI register lists nine restaurants for the whole country and has no café category at all, so a quiet result from us means "not recorded", not "nowhere to eat".
