How bad is the weather really, and how do I plan for it?

The Faroes are not cold. The Gulf Stream keeps them between about three and thirteen degrees all year. What defines the weather is wind, cloud height and how fast both change.
Why forecasts feel wrong
A national forecast is nearly meaningless here. It can be raining in Tórshavn, clear in Klaksvík and fogged in on Vágar at the same hour. BEST reads a forecast for the exact coordinates of your stay rather than for the country.
What actually stops you
- Strong wind — exposed walks can become unsafe before conditions feel severe in town.
- Low cloud — the viewpoint you drove to is inside it.
- Swell — boat trips and small ferries cancel while the harbour looks calm.
The practical response is to keep one flexible day and decide it the morning of, rather than booking a fixed sequence and hoping.
